Without correct grammar, one could write the sentence as: a bird to see down the street the dog ran. Or worse: a bird dog to see the down street ran the. Correct grammar is necessary to make sense and to communicate your thoughts clearly. So what is the future of correct grammar? It’s difficult to say.

Obviously, as more and more people become attuned to the “text grammar”, it will seep into everyday usage more and more. Already, people routinely use what were once obscure Internet acronyms regularly without thinking. I once heard someone tell a joke, but no one laughed; they simply said “LOL”. Gross. Proponents of this shortened word culture say that languages are constantly evolving. What is correct grammar now wasn’t correct grammar 500 years ago. This is true, but correct grammar has always changed at a relatively slow rate. This slow rate meant that the old correct grammar could still influence the new correct grammar. It also meant that their was plenty of archiving. But this Internet grammar is escalating so quickly, it’s becoming its own language. Finally, there is nothing more unprofessional than to ignore correct grammar.

While you might still get away with “LOL” in the company of friends, you cannot use it with the friends in your company, or your bosses. Perhaps someday the influence of the Internet-speak will be accepted as correct grammar, but until then, it’s best to not use it at all.

Writing workshops are so plentiful, it’s hard to know which to join and if it’s worth the money and the time. I mean, Shakespeare wasn’t in any writing workshops; how important or useful can they be? The answer isn’t that simple. Frankly, there’s a lot of writing workshops that might not be worth your time, but I might have a lot to learn in the same writing workshops. How is that possible? Writing isn’t like law - you don’t study and learn and pass a couple of standardized tests and get certified. There are no certified writers. Did they get anything out of it? Follow your gut, and you’ll see that some writing workshops aren’t for you, and there are also a lot of writing workshops that are.

Writing is a lonely profession, and people that aren’t in can’t begin to understand what that is like. Writing workshops gives you a chance to meet others that do know all too much about it. Writing workshops often double as a club complete with libations, rumors and “shop talk”. Being a part of writing workshops gives you access to people like you, that are trying to reach the same goals you are, and might have some experiences or information that can help you reach similar goals.

So whether you are just starting out, or whether you’re a published author, you’re never “too good” for writing workshops. You can always improve as a writer and it’s important to remain part of the writing community. Writing workshops can help you with both of those things.

I have friends who keep stacks of thank you cards in their home for when they need them. I don’t know why I never thought of this. Perhaps it is because my mom never did this. She always took the time to write a letter, but having a pile of thank you cards sitting around for when they were needed had never crossed my mind. That is different now, as I have some and I use them quite often. I just wish I had thought of it earlier. I always just bought them when I needed them, but having them in the house makes it easier to send them, and helps me remember to send them in the first place.
