In a recent conversation with a friend, I learned that she had held a long-standing desire to work with animals in a healing occupation. I’d known that all her life, she’d been the one neighbors and virtual strangers would come to with pets who were ill, or simply in need of a home. They could always count on her to help. She said that, at one point in her life, her reputation had spread to the point where she was caring for six dogs, eighteen kitties, a spider monkey and three birds! While she eventually nursed them back to health, found them good homes or whatever was required, the venture became overwhelming and she was forced to put on the brakes.

Although most people seem to restrict themselves to one kind, there are actually many different types of poems. The main poetry types are free verse and rhymed verse, but within these two subdivisions there is an incredible amount of variety. Free verse is a great place to start if you’re unfamiliar with poetry. It is the freest type of poetry because there are no rigid structures for form or content. You can make it as long or short as you want to, use internal rhymes when you want, or even write it in paragraphs. This incredible freedom allows you to explore your creative powers to your full potential.
